Going Batty! | Central Coast Pet Photographer

A few weeks back I was very privileged to be allowed into the Wildlife ARC‘s Flying Fox rehabilitation centre.

Wildlife ARC were formed in 1987 after a public meeting addressing the problems native animals were facing due to the development expansions here on the Central Coast. Wildlife ARC is run by a very dedicated band of volunteers.

At any time there will be any number of Flying Foxes in care for any number of reasons! Some animals are in permanent care as they are unable to be released back into the wild, like this old Girl with only one eye…

Some are recovering from wounds, some are being treated for a common fungal growth on their wings and some just drop in for a feed and to hang out with their mates!

The day I visited was a beautiful sunny winters day – now I for one always think of Flying Foxes as nocturnal creatures – which they are but they are surprisingly active during the day as well. It was very interesting to watch them move around the enclosure, they are very inquisitive animals and they loved moving into the patches of sunlight for grooming – of which there was a lot happening!

Apparently wings take a great deal of care! It is just amazing when you see them up close how complex their wings are and how very fragile as well!

I honestly could have stayed and photographed these fascinating creatures all day long, but alas other duties were calling, but here are some more images of these wonderful animals…

I am already looking forward to my next visit to the Wildlife ARC Flying Foxes, hopefully around the time the babies arrive! Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who showed me around and who do such a magnificent job caring for and rehabilitating these wonderful animals. I fi can urge all my Friends and followers, head over to the Wildlife ARC page and see how you too can help – everything counts.
