Beautiful Beasties is an international network of professional pet photographers, of which I am very privileged to be a part of. Within the network a group was formed for photographers who wanted to participate in a project, a 52 week project. Each week a theme is chosen and posted, then we all go out and take a photograph or series of photographs to fit the theme, then we all post onto our own websites and form a ring by linking all the websites. That means you can look at my images and then follow the links all over the world to see what other pet photographers are capturing.

The theme for week 4 is – “Black & White” – chosen by Karen Weiler in Canada – ” I love black and white photos…so I thought it would be a fun idea to have a sea of them this week.  Or, just have black and/or white predominantly in your image.  It’s up to you! ”

Oh, I too love Black & White images, I had so many, many ideas for this one :) I called on my Daughter Aimilee, who was more than happy to model my new  Poppy & Rose Full Length Tutu…

sharonstokesphotography-DSC_7081-Edit-Edit

Aimilee who is only 7 had to sit on a bar stool, so I could capture the length of the Tutu.

sharonstokesphotography-DSC_7102-Edit-Edit

and of course the dogs could not be left out….

sharonstokesphotography-DSC_7115-Edit-Edit

sharonstokesphotography-DSC_7121-Edit-Edit Now, I would like to point out that I gave Aimilee an idea, she then posed herself – and the dogs? Well, they too posed themselves! I think my Girls are all getting too used to being in front of the camera, it was hard to get a shot without the dogs, they kept positioning themselves right where I would want them!!

Another 2012 catch up blog post, I am getting there slowly…

Just before Xmas, Master Monte came into the studio – he had been ‘pet-napped’ so he could have a studio session without his mum knowing about it.

The plan was to have his studio shots done and put together an album for his mum as her very special surprise Xmas gift, how lovely is that!!??

sharonstokesphotography-DSC_4043-Edit

Now I have to say that Monte is a little Rockstar – at 10 years old he was not interested in wasting time, I would put him in position take some images – re-arrange him, take some more – set change, take more images and Monte just went with the flow, he was so great to work with – some dogs just make my job easy :)

And I am very happy to say, we got Monte’s album designed, printed and delivered just in time for Xmas. A big thank you to Anthony for bringing Monte into the studio, it was a pleasure to meet both of you.

The theme for week 3 is – “My Town” – chosen by Sue Collura from Massachusetts, USA – ” I thought it would be fun to see special things about where you live showcased in your photos…a cool sign, great architecture, a special view…something that shows your city’s personality! ”

I had better start of this weeks post with a bit about where I live….I live in ‘Bensville’ – a small suburb of the NSW, Central Coast.

Why do I say small? According to Wikipedia (yes I looked up details about where I live) Bensville is only 2 square Kilometres (which is 0.8 square miles). But while Bensville might be small in size, we love it here!! Why do we love it so much – well one of the main reasons is there is not much here :) but there is so much here at the same time.

Our place backs right onto the Bouddi National Park – loads of native plants, animals and birds – which goes over the hill and down to the beach (which has a great off leash area for the dogs) and the Tasman Sea. On the other side of Bensville there is Brisbane Water, where the dogs love to swim and the big Boys like to water-ski. Right next door to Bensville is Empire Bay – where the kids go to school and the dogs go every morning to the off leash park for running, swimming and play time.

Bensville is named after a pioneer of the area, Benjamin Davis. His father had been a school teacher at Kincumber and Davistown is named after his family. Benjamin started a shipbuilding business around 1850 and also owned 1,000 acres (4.05 km2) of land there. When a post office was opened, it was named Bensville, in honour of the pioneer.

As I mentioned above we also spend a lot of time at Empire Bay…..

See you next Friday S.

Just before Xmas, I had in the studio four of the cutest kids around!

We started off with Chelsea & Zac, Brother & Sister who were getting photos taken for their Grandparents Xmas gift,

sharonstokesphotography_4141

Now here is where the BFF’s bit comes into the title of this post, Chelsea is my Daughter, Aimilee’s BFF and Zac is my Son, Ash’s BFF.

What happens when you ask two 4 year old boys to come and get their photo’s take? Well…this of course….

sharonstokesphotography_4189

That posing (or lack of ) was totally of their own doing…sigh…After some bribing, hair pulling (mine) and a fair few laughs we did get the boys to give us a great shot…

sharonstokesphotography_4182

Next up it was the girl’s turn, these two are natural performers in front of the camera and it was not hard to get great shots of Chelsea & Aimilee…

sharonstokesphotography_4151

sharonstokesphotography_4179

I even managed to get a great shot of my two kids together – a very rare occurrence!

sharonstokesphotography_4247

But the challenge was on, could I get all four of these kids in one shot – and looking natural and happy?! Thanks to Chelsea & Zac’s Mum, a fair bit of extra bribery and a lot more laughs we got the shot that both Lizzie and I as Mum’s were really happy with and whats more, I think this image really does depict the relationship between these four kids….

sharonstokesphotography_4238

This was a really fun session – I do think it can be harder working with your own kids – they are just so used to ignoring me!! But we got there in the end :)

The theme for week 2 is – Seasonal Fun, chosen by Kelly Ladouceur from Canada – “By seasonal, I mean cold weather/winter fun (for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere) or summer/hot weather fun (for those  in the Southern Hemisphere).”

This theme is great timing, with a scorching heat wave here and the kids on school holidays this week was always going to involve the beach and the pool.

Here is Skarla enjoying our local dog friendly beach….
